Showa Day at Meiji Jingu

April 29th was Showa Day. There were many celebrations and ceremonies at Meiji Jingu in honor of Emperor Hirohito. This year is particular important as it is also the 100th anniversary of Emperor Meiji's death. Many great things going on at Meiji Jingu.

I went mainly because of an outdoor Bugaku performance but all of the ceremonial activities were quite festive!

Two men entered from opposite compass points carrying spears. They honored the stage.

The gagaku ensemble was amazing. They brought out a pair of the large drums and cymbals for the performance.

Shos, hichirikis, and ryutekis abound.

Bugaku is gagaku with dancers. The dance included two groups of four dancers each.
The dance was beautiful -  slow and stately.

It was a wonderful day and afterwards I went for a quiet stroll down Takeshita Dori in Harajuku.

It was a real Tokyo experience.  :-)
